Child & Senior Nutrition Policy

The federal omnibus bill “Healthy and Hunger-free Kids Act” was passed in December 2010. While this piece of authorizing legislation won’t come up again until 2015, the funding authorization is an annual concern. Three Square operates both the Summer Food Service Program and Kids Cafe, which are directly funded through this important piece of legislation.
The Older American’s Act will soon be up to for reauthorization and with the federal deficit negotiations going on, critical legislation like OAA may emerge in Congressional committee work sooner rather than later 2012. Meals on Wheels and congregate feeding programs, like those at senior centers provide vital services to vulnerable seniors at risk of hunger and in need of opportunities to socialize and feel a sense of connection to the community.

Imagine your child’s classroom: thirty children, and fifteen of them are hungry.

55% of children in the Clark County School District are enrolled in free and reduced-price meal programs based on their family income. That’s over 170,000 kids facing hunger at home and coming to school unprepared to learn.
