Watching my kids play together is always a heartwarming experience. I have a seven-year-old daughter and a son who just turned one. Watching my daughter do silly dances, make silly faces at my son and hearing him laugh and squeal with delight are all wonderful reminders of all that childhood is supposed to be. Childhood is supposed to look like love, joy, and happiness.
But childhood might not look like this for the 1 in 4 children in Southern Nevada whose families may not know where their next meal is coming from. It is difficult to overstate the devastating economic toll that COVID-19 has had in our community. Unfortunately, childhood hunger is a perfect example of the pandemic’s great and terrible impact. Right now, there are more than 131,000 children in Southern Nevada living in a food-insecure home. COVID-19 has resulted in a 45% increase in the number of children in food-insecure households.
Childhood should elicit thoughts of happiness, not hunger. With your support, children in our community can grow up hunger-free. Three Square’s Bag Childhood Hunger campaign is a wonderful opportunity to help children enjoy all that childhood is supposed to be, with each dollar you give providing up to 6 meals for children in need in our community. We look forward to that day when we can re-gather and open our campus to volunteer opportunities again. Hopefully in the near future, you can join us in our kitchen and help us pack fresh, nutritious meals for children throughout the valley.
Let’s fight childhood hunger together.
