Partnerships play a vital role in Three Square’s mission. Annual campaigns like Walmart’s Fight Hunger. Spark Change support food banks across the nation, including ours. Not only does Three Square benefit from this incredible initiative, but we also receive ongoing support from local stores year-round. Whether it’s volunteering at the food bank or collaborating with us on food rescue efforts, Sam’s Club and Walmart team members demonstrate their commitment to helping us create a hunger-free community every day.

This gratitude message is dedicated to our volunteers.

As Volunteer Appreciation Week unfolds (April 21–27), Three Square Food Bank would like to take this opportunity to pause and recognize the extraordinary contributions you make to our community. Each volunteer is a pivotal part of our mission, and this week, we shine a light on your efforts, your kindness, and the incredible difference you make.

Every day, Three Square sets out on its mission, “to provide wholesome food to hungry people, while passionately pursuing a hunger-free community”, alongside a constantly invigorated food network of more than 200 Feeding America affiliates, and in partnership with more than 150 agency partners across Southern Nevada. But that isn’t where the partnership ends.

In pursuit of closing the meal gap in Southern Nevada for more than 274,000 food-insecure people who, on average, miss 5.8 meals per week, we require the support of our public partners too. These partnerships include Clark County, City of Henderson, City of Las Vegas, and City of North Las Vegas.

I had never seen the depths of hunger prior to joining Three Square Food Bank almost a decade ago. That’s when I learned that hunger exists in every zip code across the Las Vegas Valley.

My husband and I have a large family, and the thread that pulls together all our most memorable moments is FOOD. It’s a love that has been passed down to our girls, who, while are still young, will eat almost anything. Ask them their favorite foods, and they’ve gots lists prepared. Pierogi, sushi, candy. All in all though, we agree, home cooking is our favorite.

Vegas View Community Food Bank has been partnering with Three Square since 2008. However, their story began more than 40 years ago when Pastor Jerald Mason’s mother, Lulu, and a team of volunteers were serving 50 meals weekly. That number has since tripled to 150 meals.

Every year, it amazes me how fast the holidays come upon us, but I look forward to them for many reasons. My childhood was filled with so many wonderful memories of family gatherings and delightful meals that still hold true today. What I also look forward to is seeing firsthand how our community bands together to help our neighbors who need help providing food for their families.

As a new month begins, we remind ourselves to take a moment to reflect on the events of September, which is known here at Three Square and across the nation as Hunger Action Month. Our community never fails to rally together when help is needed, and this month was no exception.

My name is Darwin Bosen, and I'm the Director of Community Engagement at Three Square Food Bank. In short, my role is to help Three Square and our community of partners distribute healthy and nutritious meals. It's a blessing to be a part of this organization and, more importantly, this mission of pursuing a hunger-free community.

Most of my work revolves around guiding and leading our Agency Representative, Childhood Nutrition, and Central Kitchen teams as we distribute food throughout Southern Nevada. I have the privilege of leading a team that coordinates these distributions in locations varying from drive-thru distributions to neighborhood recreation centers and other services throughout the community.

Watching my kids play together is always a heartwarming experience. I have a seven-year-old daughter and a son who just turned one. Watching my daughter do silly dances, make silly faces at my son and hearing him laugh and squeal with delight are all wonderful reminders of all that childhood is supposed to be. Childhood is supposed to look like love, joy, and happiness.

Before March 2020, most of us could never have imagined that the world as we knew it was about to change so drastically. As a result of the pandemic, many people in our community would not be able to feed their families. I am so proud to be part of an organization that immediately stepped up to the plate to find new and safe ways to provide families with the extra food that they needed.

I remind myself daily how fortunate I am to work with amazing people who bring positivity and hope to our community. Our volunteers are incredible, and they go above and beyond to help in any way that they can. Whether it is waking up early to help at a drive-thru distribution or delivering groceries, our volunteers bring a unique energy and sense of excitement to every volunteer activity.

My life has been marked by seasons of turbulence and calm which varied in length and intensity.

My freshman year in college was an exceptional time of growth. Barely 17, I thrilled over a wide circle of newfound friends and professors who took an interest in me. My sophomore year I struggled. After sobbing on the phone one night to my father, he penned a letter saying, “Look around you. There are others who have less going for them than you do, and they’re making it.”

Even as an adolescent, I knew those trying times had value. I learned to let go of past disappointments. I learned to look back over my shoulder and see pools of grace. Early insights borne from adversity prepared me for life and served me well.

As a teenager growing up in Las Vegas, I had a dear friend who often invited me into their home. They had a wonderful family, and their home was a place that always felt good to me.

Close to their refrigerator, which is where we teenage boys spent a good deal of time, there was a large sign that read, "BE OF GOOD CHEER."
